1st Lt. Walter Fraser was born on May 17, 1920 to parents Laurinda and Walter Fraser.  His father, the senior Walter Fraser, was a farmer before being employed by the government as a post master.  He was a veteran of World War I.  

Fraser was unmarried.  He lived with his parents; two sisters, Marjorie and Jean; and brother, James.  

Fraser was 19 years old when World War II began and 22 years old when he enlisted in the armed forces.  He enlisted from his home town of Bolckow, Missouri.  He entered active service on May 28, 1942, when he was 24 years old. 

He attended the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy for two years.  

 

The Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy was one of the first technological institutions in the country.  It is known today as the Missouri University of Science and Technology.
